Namdaemun or Sungnyemun is a historic gate located in the heart of Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The building is also known by the name of Sungnyemun, which means the Gate of the Great Ceremony, which is written on the board gate. Reference to Namdaemun is widely used because it is situated in the south of the gates that protect Hanyang (Seoul's name at the time). Namdaemun means "Great South Gate".

History Namdaemun or Sungnyemun

Before the fire accident in 2008, Namdaemun was the oldest wooden structure in Seoul. With the architecture of wood and stone with a roof of 2 levels, the gate was completed in 1398 and used as the entrance to the city center, also to welcome state guests, as well as to protect the city from the Korean tiger that has long disappeared from South Korea. Construction began in 1395 during the 4th year of the reign of King Taejo and completed in 1398. The structure was built again in 1447 and renovated several times since then. At first Namdaemun was one of three pieces of the main gate, the other is the Dongdaemun (East Gate), and Seodaemun (West Gate), which has long been destroyed.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the city walls that surround the city of Seoul was destroyed by the Japanese colonial government with a pretext "to smooth traffic flow in the region". Back gate was renovated in 2005 by adding the surrounding grass to beautify it before the date of March 3, 2006 re-opened to the public. During the restoration, 182 page blueprint of the design of the gates was made to prepare a new reconstruction in the event of a problem.

Namdaemun burning or Sungnyemun

At about 20:50 pm on February 10, 2008, a fire burned the roof and demolished the Namdaemun and wood structure, but the structure of its walls still intact. The fire continued to flare out of control so until midnight, although its roof crush has been deployed 360 firefighters tried to extinguish the flames. Many witnesses who saw someone who came near Namdaemun before the fire occurred, and near the wreckage was found two pieces of cigarette lighters. A 69-year-old man, identified on Chae Jong-gi, was arrested for a crime he did. The police report states that Chae poured paint thinner on the ground floor of the gate and start a fire to ignite the fire. Police said that Chae upset after not being paid in full on the ground that he sold to developers. The same people had previously been arrested after trying to burn the palace Changgyeong in 2006.
Cultural Heritage Administration of South Korea to rehabilitate Namdaemun mention that it took 3 years was estimated to cost ₩ 20 trillion (USD 21 million). South Korean President-elect Lee Myung-bak has proposed a campaign to donate rehabilitation project gate.

Namdaemun Market or Sungnyemun

If you visit Seoul, but not visited Namdaemun market, people will say that you've never been to Korea. Why?
